Angkor-era gold jewellery has been making headlines across the globe this week,

Angkor-era gold jewellery has been making headlines across the globe this week, with the return to Cambodia of 77 gold and gem-encrusted pieces that previously formed part of Douglas Latchford’s personal collection in the UK. It’s the biggest boost to the National Museum’s gold collection since April 2017, when UK art dealers voluntarily delivered ten gold artifacts - including a head cover, a pair of pectoral ear pendants, a pair of earrings, a necklace, a pair of armband, an upper-waist band and a lower-waist band - to the Cambodian embassy in London. The antiquities dealers, Jonathan Tucker & Antonia Tozer of Asian Art, who’ve sold Khmer antiquities for many years, established their gallery in 2000 and were previously specialists with the art dealership of Spink and Son in London, who were intrinsically linked with Douglas Latchford’s nefarious activities for many years. The gold treasures they handed over arrived back in Phnom Penh at the end of the year and the following month went on display at the National Museum as part of an exhibition called, The Adornment for Deity and Human. Photographs of these pieces of gold jewellery had previously been seen on the cover and inside the 2008 publication, Khmer Gold – Gifts for the Gods, a coffee-table sized tome from Latchford and Emma Bunker, that identified the gold items as belonging to a private UK collection. Co-incidentally, Latchford also ‘donated’ pieces of gold royal regalia to the museum at that time including a crown, ear pendants, a chest-cross chain, and arm and wristbands. The museum’s exhibition contained the donated items and the recently repatriated pieces. In a timely reminder, these photographs are from the 2018 exhibition, via a variety of sources.https://www.facebook.com/andy.brouwer.71
