Khmer Art Overseas:
The Alexis Renard gallery are experts in Islamic and Indian Art and operate in the center of Paris, France since 1999. I spotted this beautiful head of a Male Deity in their 2022 catalogue and saw that it was previously in the collection of American film producer Michael Phillips, who I mentioned the other day as having a fine tenth century Brahma sculpture in his home. His parents were noted New York dealers in Asian fine arts, who sold artifacts to many of the top museums, and their son has obviously maintained an interest in Khmer and Southeast Asian artworks. This particular Male Deity is now in the hands of a private French collector and is up for sale. It depicts a god wearing a detailed headdress with floral motifs, tied delicately at the back and surrounding a high jatamukuta (crown of hair) above a slightly damaged diadem. The hairline, the contours of the eyes, the beard and the delicate moustache are all finely engraved, in the Pre Rup style. The surface polish and refined style, and the use of greywacke sandstone, allow its precise dating to the reign of Rajendravarman II in the middle of the tenth century. It’s a gorgeous piece, much like the standing Brahma that holds center-stage in the film producer’s Beverly Hills living room. How and when they left their Cambodian temple home are questions that remain unanswered.https://www.facebook.com/andy.brouwer.71
